THE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS OF ZEN

 

This is a brief and incomplete "family tree" of the various traditions found in America today.
The "goal" of all Zen Teachers and Schools is the same, but the "style" of these different lines are different. 
We will in the future try to outline these for you.

 

Korean Chogye
                This consist mostly of the Kwan Um Zen School run by Teachers authorized by Seung Sahn

Vietnamese, Order of Interbeing, run by Teachers authorized by Thich Nhat Hanh

Japanese Schools:

                    Rinzai Zen.

                    Soto Zen consist of many branches in the West. The 3 best known are:

                              Shunryu Suzuki lineage.

                              Taizan Maezumi Roshi's students developed:
                                       White Plum.
                                       Ordinary Mind Zen School of Joko Beck.
                                       Mountains and Rivers Order of Daido Loori.

                              Order of Buddhist Contemplatives of Jiyu Kennett.

                              One of Harada Sogaku's (Soto) students, Hakuun Yasutani 
                                        developed an independent School, Sambo Kyodan
                                        out of which came Diamond Sangha, Pacific Zen Institute
                                        of Robert Aitken, a Dharma Heir of Koun Yamada Roshi, successor of Yasutani.
